Dating back to ancient times, cinnamon was once more precious than gold and was regarded as a sign of prosperity in medieval Europe. Its many uses ranged from perfume to incense, antibacterial to stimulant, and as a token of friendship. True cinnamon originated in Sri Lanka, although related species grown throughout Asia are recognized as cinnamon. From May through October, cinnamon is harvested from evergreen-like trees of the Laurel family. The bark is scraped off during the rainy season when it peels more easily.
